Text to Text Connection
February Read Alouds

Bell ringers this week were read alouds that all had a connection to the theme of Black History month. Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles is a story set during the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 told by Young Joe. His best friend is John Henry, a young African American boy. Even though the boys are of different race, their friendship is colorblind, and they are the best of friends. Their favorite thing to do during the summer is swim. Because of segregation, John Henry is not allowed in the town pool, so the boys dam up a swimming hole with sticks and rocks at Fiddler's Creek. When Young Joe's mom announces at dinner one night that the law has changed and everyone will be allowed to be together, the boys plan in excitement to go to the town pool to swim. The next day, the boys are stunned to see that the pool has been filled in with asphalt. John Henry and Young Joe take a stand by going into Mr. Mason's store with arms around each's shoulders.
